Richard Ryan

Combat Martial Arts Founder of the Year

Richard Ryan comes from a long line of gifted athletes. The men in his family were all wrestlers and his grandfather was a champion boxer and police captain who taught defensive tactics for the FBI. He became interested in wrestling at the age of eight. Under the influence of his grandfather he also became fascinated with police tactics and began the study of boxing a short time later. As a teenager he studied Tae Kwon-do and Chinese Kenpo, eventually earning his first Black Belt. A few years later after seeing a Bruce Lee movie, he sought out and began the study of Wing Chun Gung Fu. In just over 2 years he had learned the entire Wing Chun system, achieved a full instructorship and was awarded a 3rd degree black sash and had become the youngest instructor in the history of the Arizona Gung Fu Academy. Around that time Sifu Ryan also started training in full contact kickboxing. Seeking to expose himself to as many types of fighters and styles as possible, he formed a hard core sparring association called the Gladiator Club. The club advertised that Sifu Ryan would fight anyone and everyone who would be willing to get into the ring with him. Having to face so many different opponents and styles in extreme situations changed his outlook on real fighting and marked the origin of what was to eventually become a new martial art. None of his formal training had prepared him for the brutality and diversity that he had experienced in the street or the ring. Thus began his pursuit of new and better fighting methods, a journey that led him to study a diverse range of both hand-to-hand and weapons combat arts. Over the next half decade Ryan trained incessantly, sometimes for more than eight hours a day, working out, sparring, drilling, writing and researching anything that could help him improve and understand the realities of combat. Influenced by Mohammed Ali, Ed Parker, Bruce Lee, and others, Ryan started keeping journals chronicling every step of his journey which number more than seventy volumes at the time of this writing. Following his new belief in a more total approach to combat, Ryan stepped out of the confines of his hand-to-hand and traditional weapons combat training and began training in all forms of combative firearms. He mastered the handgun, long-gun, shotgun and assault rifle and become an expert marksman and firearms instructor at the U.S. Marksmanship Academy and eventually the world famous Gunsite Academy in Paulden, Arizona. Today, Ryan has emerged as one of the earliest pioneers of the reality fighting arts having spent decades in the study of the sciences of physics and kinesiology with the sole intention of developing new and better fighting methods. He is renowned for his vast knowledge of reality combat and understanding of the science behind the arts. He earned a reputation as an innovator and advocate of the scientific approach to fighting, a reputation that is with him to this day. Richard Ryan is regarded as one of the nation’s leading authorities on reality-based combat martial arts, self-defense and tactical weapons training.

Bill "Superfoot" Wallace

America’s Kickboxing Legend

Bill Wallace retired as the undefeated Professional Karate Association Middleweight Champion after defeating Bill Biggs in a 12-round bout in June, 1980. The victory, Wallace's 23rd straight, signaled the end to an illustrious 15-year career in tournament and full contact fighting. Known to the karate world simply as "Superfoot", symbolic of his awesome left leg which was once clocked in excess of 60 mph, Wallace left a string of battered and bruised bodies along the martial arts fighting trail. He used his foot as others would use their hands, faking opponents with two or three rapid fake kicks and following with one solid knockout technique. His power was amazing, his precision astounding. Wallace, a 5-foot, 10 1/2 inch native of Portland, Ind., began studying karate in February 1967 after suffering a right leg injury in a judo accident. The injury left him without the use of the leg in karate competition. In the next seven years, "Superfoot," named after his manager saw an advertisement for a "super foot long hot dog" at a sporting event, dominated the point-tournament circuit. As a national champion point fighter three years in a row, Wallace captured virtually every major event on the tournament circuit. The more prestigious victories included: the U.S. Championships (3 times), the USKA Grand Nationals (3 times), and the Top Ten Nationals (2 times). He was such as dominant figure in martial arts that Black Belt Magazine named him to its Hall of Fame three times in seven years -- twice as "Competitor of the Year" and once as "Man of the Year." In 1973, Wallace, whose education includes a bachelor's degree (1971) in physical education from Ball State University and a master's degree (1976) in kinesiology from Memphis State University, suffered what many considered a career-ending injury. However, one of Wallace's friends, the late Elvis Presley, flew in a Los Angeles acupuncturist to treat the Karate champion at Graceland Manor. A year later, Wallace turned professional and captured the PKA middleweight karate championship with a second-round knockout. He relinquished the crown in 1980, undefeated and respected around the world. Despite his retirement, Wallace continues to be one of the martial arts most popular figures. He is the author of three books, as well as a former member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and has been active in the film industry. His credits include : A Force of One with Chuck Norris; Kill Point, with Cameron Mitchell; Continental Divide and Neighbors, with John Belushi; Protector, with Jackie Chan; A Prayer for the Dying, with Mickey Rourke; Ninja Turf; and A sword of Heaven.

John Sharkey Jr.

Grandmaster’s Martial Arts Humanitarian Award

The early 60’s would find karate still in its infancy and starting to establish itself in the “windy city” of Chicago with newly established schools having “dojo wars” in an effort to prove their skills and the bloody outcomes sometimes made the morning papers. John Sharkey, Jr. was about to experience some of the most historic and controversial times in U. S. karate history. He trained in Shorei-Ryu under one of the most controversial instructors of all time, John Keehan, better known as “Count Dante” and later with Ken Newton, Burly Wagner, Charles Bridgewater and Andy Dijakowicz. During the 1967-68 tournament season he was a Top 10 USKA Black Belt competitor. Now an 8th degree black belt in Shorei Ryu karate, he also has black belts in Tai Tsu Do, Shotokan, Goju Shorei Ryu and certification in the Filipino art of Modern Arnis under Grandmaster Remy Presas along with various law enforcement instructor levels. John co-founded the NASKA organization in 1980 and was also named one of the top 10 judges in America by Karate Illustrated Magazine. He has also been instrumental in promoting the new World Sport Karate Federation. John has been President of the American Karate Association since 1977 and is one of the most respected instructors and promoters in the Midwest. This year the AKA will celebrate its 40th year at the AKA Grand Nationals, one of the largest open tournaments in the country. However, one image that is most respected about John Sharkey, Jr. is his compassion for his family of students that come from all walks of life. He sees the promise of passing on his love of the martial arts to the young person on the street corner who wants out of that environment, to the businessman or woman who walks through his door. He has helped fulfill the dreams of many, such as World Champions Mike Chaturantabut, a Blue Power Ranger; Matt Mullins, who is currently filming his first starring role; Craig Henningsen, who has just returned with John from various Hollywood studios with near-future plans; Suzann Wancket, Mike Belcher and many others in training. His dedicated students and fellow karateka would say that John Sharkey, Jr. effortlessly puts their “you can do anything!” future ahead of his own.
