Being a fighter from the U.S., he naturally came in contact with the fighting arts of the Orient. His original martial arts training came in the Wado-Ryu style in 1957 in Japan. Burleson trained with several schools of karate and Chinese boxing in Japan and Hong Kong before he came back to the states in 1959. Settling back into his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, Burleson worked out with the few other ex-servicemen that he could find that had trained in Asia. He had already earned a red belt in Korean Tang Soo Do when he was introduced to Dallas resident Allen R. Steen. Steen was a brown belt under Tae Kwon Do pioneer Jhoon Rhee and was eager for his new friend to meet Mr. Rhee. After a 3-month waiting period, he began his study of Bruce Lee 's Jeet Kune Do under the guidance of Lee's top student Dan Inosanto. Paul began travelling extensively with Dan for seminars and JKD demonstrations and achieved the rank of Full Instructor in July of 1978. During these years at the Kali Academy, Paul realized that he had a certain propensity for the street-oriented side of JKD. He began to concentrate his martial art studies in those areas which were most suited for the gritty realism of a street fight. In 1983 he formed an organization devoted to these interests, Progressive Fighting Systems. He began traveling to teach seminars, and made his first series of instructional videos in 1986. In 1987, he moved to Virginia with a contract to teach hand-to-hand combat to the United States Navy SEAL Team Six. Remaining in Virginia until 1991, he then returned to California to resume teaching group classes and seminars.
