Howard George

 

Phillip Porter Lifetime Achievement Award

 

 

Howard George is a retired First Sergeant, United States Marine Corps. He has been a world-class wrestler during most of his lifetime. Howard was a member of three consecutive Olympic wrestling teams. He went to Australia in 1956, as a member of The U.S. Olympic Wrestling team, wrestled in the Rome Olympics. He was also Number One in his weight class in The 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. However, Judge George was given a choice in 1964; He could either compete in the 1964 Olympics or go to Vietnam for another combat tour with his marine outfit. He chose Vietnam, was wounded in action and was retired from the Marine Corps because of his amount of injuries. Despite numerous medical problems, including the amputation of one foot, he continues to teach Judo and Jujitsu at his Northern New York Judo Jujitsu Club in Watertown, New York. Judge Howard George holds a 10th Degree Black Belt in wrestling, and an 8th Degree Black Belt in both Judo and Jujitsu. The United States Martial Arts Association in honored to present The Philip S. Porter Lifetime Achievement Award for 2002 to Howard R. George.

Martial Arts Webmaster of The Year

 

 

A student of Donn Schucker, Bob has been responsible for maintaining the design and making updates to the website for The United States Martial Arts Association. Bob has worked tirelessly utilizing his skills on the Internet to promote the USMA organization and further the cause of martial arts training. His abilities, both on the mat and at the computer, are greatly appreciated.

Michael Tatkinoton Courage & Character Award

 

 

Confined to a wheelchair, John, a 1st Degree Black Belt in American Freestyle Karate began by watching his two children in karate class. Eventually, he studied privately and later joined the class as a student. Since then, he has been honored with the 1988 "Martial Artist of The Year" award from his school and took first place in many tournaments. Today, he teaches at Karate American in Eau Claire and Red Dragon Academy in Memomonie. He frequently lectures at college, secondary and elementary schools on overcoming obstacles.

Born in Hawaii in 1965, Fred began training with his father when he was a young child. He studied boxing, karate and military hand to hand combat. In the early 80's, he discovered Aikido and he, a 4th Degree Black Belt, has been a student and teacher ever since. In 1994, he moved to Arizona and established Aikido of Phoenix, which has become one of the largest schools of its kind in the country.

 

 

William McDonald

 

Founder of the Year

 

 

William began his training in 1972 in Texas and has a 6th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, a 2nd Degree in Moo Duk Kwon and a 1st Degree in Kenpo Karate. In addition, he has also competed in national and international tournaments throughout his career. He is the co-founder of the system "Tong II Lo" (Path to Unity) and it is his goal to expand the teachings of that art throughout the world.

A 6th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, he currently trains in Kombatan, a Filipino martial art and attends seminars in various disciplines. With 40 years in the martial arts, Bo is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Taiho Jitsu and has also studied karate and ju-jitsu. Bo has 5 students under him who hold Masters' rank. Thomas is the National Coordinator of Self Protection training and has been a Criminal Investigator/Instructor with the V.A. Law Enforcement Center since 1997.

A 5th Degree Black Belt in Bok Fu Kenpo and Chinese Kung Fu, Rhuel began his martial training in 1971 in Dublin, California. Living in Harrison, he also teaches Shotokan Karate. His main objective is to continue teaching young people and adults how to defend themselves against all types of situations that might occur. In addition to Jeet Kune Do, he has studied Judo, Kali, Thai Boxing, Silat and Tai chi Chuan. Originally trained by his brother Ken, he soon became the Master of Pancrase, a popular submission-based art representing Lion's Den Gym, Frank gained the coveted King of Pancrase title which he earned after several competition wins Frank entered his first no-holds-barred fight in Hawaii in January 1997 and never looked back. He holds world records for 14 and 20 second championship victories in many of his bouts having fought around the world, Frank has proved himself to be one of the greatest champions both as an athlete and a strategist in 1998. Frank Shamrock was named Black Belt Magazine's Best Full-Contact Fighter of the Year and Wrestling Observer named him Fighter of the Decade for the 1990's.

At 39 years old, Robert is a red belt in Taekwondo under Jim Snowberger. He has also studied judo, Muay Thai kickboxing and grappling. A member of the Midwest Martial Arts Alliance, he has been an instructor for the Youth of America program. Recently he qualified for the USA Team Alliance when it fight in world cup competition in Cancun, Mexico in January 2003.

Robert is a 10th Degree Black Belt and the training director of The Bujinkan Indianapolis Dojo. A personal student of Dr. Massaaki Hatsumi, the 34th Grandmaster of the Togakure-ryu Ninjutsu tradition. Robert is the first person awarded the coveted title of Shidoshi in the State of Indiana. A Marion County Deputy Sheriff with over 25 years of law enforcement experience. He trains regularly with his teacher in Japan.

Steve Silvey has practiced Judo, Taekwondo, Jujitsu and Karate since the 1960's. An 8th Degree Black Belt in Tactical Hapkido, he was inducted into the 2000 USMA Hall of Fame as "Law Enforcement Instructor of The Year" and in 2001 as Grandmaster. He teaches at his school in Bloomington Normal.

 

 

Jim Snowberger

A 4th Degree Black Belt, he owns "Snow Taekwondo and Karate Do" which opened in 1998. He continues to study with Grandmaster Larry Goris of The Kokon Ryu organization. In 2000, Jim and his wife, Kelli, along with Grandmaster Goris, became coach for The U.S. National Martial Arts Team at the "USA vs. The World" open tournament in Waikiki, Hawaii.

 

 

Kelli Snowberger

Kelli began her martial career in November of 1995 under Grandmaster Lany Goris in Taekwondo. She met her husband, Jim in the same class and later in 1998, co-founded "Snow's Taekwondo". In 1993, Brenda Day Whitlock became a member of the Colorado Springs Police Department as a member of the Bomb Squad then, later, the S.WA.T. Team.
